Workforce Development

Through READ USA's Literacy Tutoring model, teen tutors gain valuable, transferrable workforce skills that open pathways to opportunity.

95% of tutors reported improvement in problem solving and work ethic - among other skills and traits - because of their time with READ USA.

READ USA tutors undergo rigorous workforce development training led by experts in professional skills and literacy to prepare them to lead one-on-one Literacy Tutoring for elementary students who are struggling to read. This dual-impact approach is simultaneously closing the literacy gap while building a workforce capable of solving real-world challenges.

Throughout the program, tutors receive ongoing training sessions and real-time coaching to adapt to student needs and advance professional growth. The effectiveness of READ USA’s tutors has been proven by the significant literacy improvement achieved by elementary students.

Whether they pursue a skill trade, a college degree, or directly enter the workforce, the practical, real-world knowledge that tutors gain through READ USA enables them to be:

  • Skilled at applying what they learn to the task at hand
  • Motivated to do what it takes to achieve results
  • Experienced at teaching others and responding to individual needs
  • Coachable to learn virtually any skill necessary to perform their job
  • Adaptable to shifting tasks and fast-changing work environments

Ongoing Training Opportunities for Tutors

READ USA provides regular, ongoing professional skills and literacy training and development opportunities to teen tutors. Because of READ USA's intentional focus on workforce development, employers are gaining adaptable, coachable professionals with real-world experience. This reduces the amount of training and capital needed for employees to successfully contribute to their teams.

LITERACY TUTORING

At the beginning of their employment with READ USA, teen tutors receive an intensive two-day training in literacy skills to effectively tutor elementary students are who struggling to read. Once in place at an elementary school, tutors receive ongoing, in-the-moment coaching as needed from certified reading teachers during their daily lesson implementation to maximize their effectiveness. Additionally, tutors are provided time for professional development during their daily tutoring schedule. This time is used to plan their tutoring lessons, receive training in instructional techniques, or learn about relevant workforce development topics from a variety of career experts.

CAREER EXPLORATION & DEVELOPMENT COACHING

READ USA provides multiple opportunities for teen tutors to learn and practice workforce skills and explore career opportunities. Some of these opportunities include:

  • Mock Interviews: Tutors participate in mock interviews with professionals from numerous industries and career types, helping them practice and develop their interview skills and how to conduct themselves and interact with professionalism.
  • Resume Writing: Tutors receive professional guidance and coaching on how to write a resume and tailor it to specific job opportunities.
  • TBRI Training: Trust-Based Relational Intervention training enables tutors to better understand and serve students that may need more informed or extra support.
  • Career Exploration: Through in-person visits to employers across all sectors, our Summer Leadership Academy, and online modules, tutors explore different career types, industries, and professions to learn more about the careers that align with their skills and interests.
