Tutoring Program

AmeriCorps Daytime Tutor

READ USA is looking for AmeriCorps Daytime Tutors ready to help elementary students build the reading skills they need to succeed.

Daytime Tutors will work directly with small groups of two to three students, delivering approximately four 40-minute literacy lessons each day. Beyond instruction, tutors will help track student progress, connect with families and receive weekly coaching from an experienced Reading Interventionist.

The eight-month AmeriCorps service opportunity runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and includes a weekly stipend, Segal Education Award, and time off for school closures and holidays.

Tutoring Program

AmeriCorps Tutor Leader

AmeriCorps Tutor Leaders receive robust training from READ USA to implement high-quality, pre-written lesson plans in a one-to-one format with elementary students, ultimately helping those students achieve or move closer to reading proficiency. 

AmeriCorps Tutor Leaders must commit to a full school year (Fall 2026 & Spring 2027), must be aged 17-21, and become eligible for an education award upon successful completion of the commitment.

Tutoring occurs after school at DCPS elementary schools on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3-6 p.m.

Tutoring Program

READ USA tutors commit to one semester (Fall 2026) and must be aged 16-21.

Teacher

Teachers will supervise and coach the delivery of high-quality reading lesson using high interest books with supportive lesson plans and phonics materials. Tutoring will include phonics and word work, vocabulary, reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. The main responsibility will be to supervise tutors at the assigned school site. Front Desk/ Dismissal Attendant

 The Front Desk/Dismissal Attendant provides logistical and administrative support at the assigned school site. Reporting to the Teacher of Organization and/or the Chief Programs Officer (CPO), the Front Desk/Dismissal Attendant manages front desk operations, greets visitors and families, assists with administrative tasks, and provides supervision during the dismissal period.

Aftercare Teacher

Reporting to the Teacher of Organization and/or the Chief Programs Officer (CPO), the Aftercare Teacher plays a crucial role managing the READ USA aftercare room(s). The main responsibility will be to monitor and provide guidance to elementary students awaiting their tutoring session each day.

Substitute Teacher

Substitute teachers play a crucial role filling in when one of our regular teachers is unavailable. Teachers will supervise and coach the delivery of high-quality reading lesson using high interest books with supportive lesson plans and phonics materials. Tutoring will include phonics and word work, vocabulary, reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.  The main responsibility will be to supervise tutors at the assigned school site.
