Mark Landen Award for Democracy Through Journalism: Nate Monroe
Executive Editor, The Florida Trib
The Mark Landen Award for Democracy Through Journalism is awarded every year to a media professional, in recognition of their work in advancing an informed society and strengthening democracy through journalism.
Nate Monroe is the executive editor of The Florida Trib, a nonprofit, statewide investigative newsroom headquartered in Jacksonville.
Previously, Nate wrote a column about Florida for the USA Today Network, examining political power and accountability. He also served as a metro columnist, beat reporter, and investigative reporter for the Florida Times-Union, where his reporting focused on Jacksonville City Hall and local government.
Nate was part of the Times-Union investigative team that exposed efforts to privatize JEA, Jacksonville's city-owned electric and water utility. The reporting helped halt the effort, prompted voter-led reforms, and contributed to a federal investigation. He also helped uncover a fraudulent charity connected to former U.S. Representative Corrine Brown, whose case ultimately resulted in a federal conviction.
His investigative work also includes an examination of flood risks associated with decades of deep dredging in the St. Johns River. Nate's journalism has earned numerous honors, including the national Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for his columns on the JEA privatization effort.
Before arriving in Jacksonville in 2013, Nate reported for newspapers in the Florida Panhandle and South Louisiana, covering everything from hurricanes and oil spills to local government.
A Louisiana State University graduate who grew up near New Orleans, Nate lives in Atlantic Beach with his wife and three sons.
