#FastFacts Wednesday
We are doing something a little different in this week’s newsletter: #FastFacts news briefs for your reading pleasure!
#DYK (Did You Know):
Today, September 17, is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day!
On this day in 1787 (so, 238 years ago today), our Founding Fathers signed the supreme law of the land, the U.S. Constitution, in Philadelphia. In 1952, Congress designated September 17 as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day by joint resolution, the day which also officially kicks off Constitution Week that continues through September 23.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, every educational institution that receives federal funds is required to hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution on or around this day every year. Teachers, educators, and parents can learn more and find resources here!
Monday, September 15, kicked off National Hispanic Heritage Month!
Running from Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 every year, this annual celebration of Hispanic culture’s influence and contributions to our nation was first signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week. President Ronald Reagan signed legislation in 1988 to expand it to the full month that we recognize and celebrate today.
Curious to learn more about National Hispanic Heritage Month? Check out events, resources, and other information here.
Library Card Sign-Up Month
September is also Library Card sign-up month! So, if you don’t have a FREE library card to access all of the amazing books, resources, and events hosted by the Jacksonville Public Library, click here to get one today! You can also walk into any branch and get a card on the spot.
We will share some fun #FastFacts again soon—stay tuned!
Children’s Book: The Man in the Red Bandanna by Honor Crowther Fagan
Illustrated by John Crowther
The Man in the Bandana is a poignant and compelling narrative that explores themes of heroism and sacrifice, centered on the true story of Welles Crowther—a young man who became a national symbol of selflessness after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Known to many as “The Man in the Red Bandana,” Welles risked—and ultimately gave—his life to help others escape the South Tower of the World Trade Center. This book aims to preserve and share his legacy in a way that is accessible and deeply moving for younger readers.
The story traces Welles Crowther’s life from his childhood to the events of 9/11, illustrating how his character, values, and sense of duty were all shaped by his upbringing and experiences. His red bandana, worn since boyhood and gifted by his father, becomes a powerful motif throughout the narrative, symbolizing courage and continuity.
This biographical account is a tribute to an individual hero and a broader meditation on empathy, civic responsibility, and the human capacity for bravery under unimaginable circumstances. The book presents these themes with emotional honesty, making the true events both understandable and impactful for young readers.
